Weekly’s old office raided by police in £1m drug bust

A former weekly newspaper office now allegedly being used as a cannabis farm has been raided as part of a £1m drug bust.

The former Powys County Times building, in Welshpool, was investigated by Dyfed-Powys Police officers when they executed a warrant to search the property on Tuesday.

The raid came just 24 hours after detectives discovered another cannabis farm in the town’s former HSBC building.

According to the County Times, the cultivation at both the former County Times and HSBC buildings are worth a combined £1m, although the factories have not been linked to one another.

The empty former County Times office, which is in a alleyway off Broad Street, Welshpool, has been described as a “sophisticated” set-up for cannabis cultivating which also “dangerously bypassed roughly 200 amps of electricity into the property”.

The newspaper is now based at Welshpool’s Severn Farm Business Park.

One man has been arrested and is currently in police custody.

A spokesperson for the force said yesterday (10): “Dyfed-Powys Police proactive drugs team executed a warrant at a property on Broad Street, Welshpool on Tuesday 9 January.

“A large amount of cannabis was located at the address. A man has been arrested and is currently in police custody.”
