A university newspaper which has been published for the past 87 years is appealing for donations in order to continue printing.

Redbrick is the student newspaper at Birmingham University and many of its alumni have gone on to have careers in journalism.

They include the current Nottingham Post editor, Natalie Fahy, who has backed the current fund-raising drive.

She said in a post on X: “Save @redbrickpaper! We need places like these at universities for budding journalists to get real-world experience. I wrote a few articles for them myself back in 2001/2!”

Launching its appeal on GoFundMe, the paper wrote: “We are Redbrick, one of the busiest student newspapers in the UK that has been running for 87 years. Sadly, we do not receive regular funding from the University or Guild of Students so our running costs come entirely from sponsorships, fundraisers and donations.

“Every one of our dedicated staff are volunteers, sacrificing countless hours to ensure the newspaper can inform the local community and provide invaluable journalistic experience for students.

“Redbrick also has an esteemed prestige as a national award winning paper, and alumni have gone on to have illustrious careers in all sectors.

“We are looking for any donation, big or small, to help us continue to function as a newspaper, and a historic institution of the University of Birmingham. Every penny goes right back into the newspaper, so any donation you can make will make a tangible impact on student media in Birmingham.”
