The shortlist has been published for an annual set of awards dedicated to showcasing excellence and innovation in print media.

Nominations have been announced for The 2024 Newspaper Awards, with specialist categories for regional daily, weekly and hyperlocal titles.

Contenders for the regional newspaper prize include the Express & Star and its sister title the Shropshire Star, along with the Southern Daily Echo, The Irish News, The Journal and the Yorkshire Evening Post.

In the weekly category, three Newsquest titles – the Ham & High, Isle of Wight County Press and Impartial Reporter – go up against Iliffe Media trio the Cambridge Independent, the Lymington Times and New Milton Advertiser, and Newbury Weekly News.

There are also six shortlisted contenders in the hyperlocal category for independent community newspapers.

They are the Hackney Citizen, Bristol Cable, Edinburgh Reporter, Peckham Peculiar, West of Dorset Magazine and Wells Voice.

Newspaper Awards director Gary Cullum, pictured, said: “This year two panel of judges, comprising 16 newspaper  executives, scrutinised newspapers from all around the world. One specialist panel of print experts judged the two printer categories, while another panel assessed the remaining 11 categories.

“Overall the standard of entry was superb, and the printed product continues to play an important role in the success of the news publishing industry.”

All the winners will be announced at a black-tie gala dinner on Tuesday 26 March at the London Hilton Bankside.
