Secretary who retrained as news sub dies aged 92

Eunice DaviesAn editorial secretary who went on to become a news sub-editor after retraining on new technology has died aged 92.

Eunice Davies, left, was a long-serving journalist on North Wales Newspapers, now part of Newsquest.

She began her career in newspapers as a secretary and editorial assistant on Wrexham daily The Leader, where among other duties she was responsible for the Chums’ Corner children’s page.

She later became editor of Country Quest magazine before, having retrained on new technology, finishing her career as a news sub-editor.

Eunice died at the Maelor Hospital on 7th April after a brief illness.

She had been married to Oswald Davies, a chartered quantity surveyor and principal lecturer in Building Studies at the then North East Wales Institute, now Wrexham University, who died in 2010 aged 81.

One of their two sons, Dr Grahame Davies, went on to become a journalist and was formerly the long-serving Deputy Private Secretary to King Charles III.

Along with other members of her family, Eunice was introduced to King Charles and Queen Camilla at St Giles’ Church in Wrexham when they visited to celebrate Wrexham’s City Status in December 2022.

Eunice was an active member of various local groups including the Felin Welsh society and the Coedpoeth Local History Society which had been founded by her late husband.

Her funeral will take place at St Mary’s Church, Minera, at 11am on Monday 29th April, with a committal for family only at Pentrebychan crematorium.
