Rugby team regains dedicated reporter eight months after cuts at daily

A rugby club has regained its own dedicated reporter at a regional daily eight months after the position was cut by its publisher.

The Hull Daily Mail has unveiled Arindam Rej as its new Hull Kingston Rovers reporter.

The rugby league club had been without a dedicated reporter since Joe Appleyard left the Mail in November amid cuts to sports coverage at Reach plc.

Dan Tomlinson, whose position was also under threat in the cuts, has continued to cover Rovers’ rivals Hull FC.

Arindam, pictured, has worked as a journalist for organisations including the BBC, Daily Mirror, Daily Telegraph, ESPN and the Yorkshire Post.

The move marks a return to his hometown and he has previous experience of working on the HDM.

In an open letter to Rovers fans, Arindam wrote: “I am passionate about rugby league being in the media spotlight and I am proud to work for a company that is choosing to fund coverage of the sport.

“I will be writing and posting regularly about Rovers now and I hope you engage and enjoy.

“I believe in fans having a voice and I want to hear what you think of what is going on at Rovers, on and off the pitch, as I make the exciting move to covering the club day to day.”
