Regional reporter wins right to name teenage hammer attacker

Rod MinchinA teenage hammer attacker has been named after a High Court judge backed a regional reporter’s application.

Rod Michin, who works for PA in the South-West of England and South Wales, succeeded in getting reporting restrictions lifted so that Thomas Wei Huang could be identified.

Mrs Justice Cutts agreed to the move after Huang was detained for life to serve a minimum term of 12 years after attacking two roommates while they slept, leaving both with severe injuries.

The 17-year-old also attacked Blundell’s School housemaster Henry Roffe-Silvester, who suffered six wounds to his head.

One of the boys has permanent brain damage as a result of the blows he sustained.

Huang, originally from Malaysia, was sentenced at Exeter Crown Court in October after being found guilty of three counts of attempted murder.

A jury was told Huang, who was aged 16 at the time of the attack, used weapons he had collected to prepare for a zombie apocalypse.

He had pleaded not guilty to attempted murder by reason of insanity due to his sleepwalking.
