Mill spreads its wings as it helps launch new London title

Manchester-based hyperlocal news pioneer Mill Media is to spread its wings by helping to launch a new local title in South London.

The Wimble will shortly be launching in Wimbledon, with a newsletter-led weekly digital operation to be augmented by a summer print edition to coincide with the tennis championships.

The initiative is being supported by the Wimbledon Quarter, a neighbourhood centre in the heart of the suburb, and also by Mill Media which has already run successful local news start-ups in Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield and Birmingham.

The Wimble is currently looking to appoint a Newsletter Writer and Local Reporter to head up its news coverage and the job is being advertised by HTFP here.

Alex Woolf of the Wimbledon Quarter told HTFP: “The Wimble is for all those who want to discover more about their local area and connect with the community around them without annoying ads or “click bait” headlines.

“We believe in local communities and we believe in Wimbledon. Our goal is to work with and for the people and businesses of Wimbledon to inform and share all Wimbledon has to offer.

“We are looking to create a meeting place in the heart of Wimbledon, a place for local people to catch-up with neighbours, work near home, do their shopping, go to the gym or eat out with friends. The Wimble is part of this community vision for local residents and businesses.”

“We are also partnering with the Mill Media Co. Their experience and expertise in how to build high-quality local newsletters will be very useful as we grow The Wimble.”

Mill Media will not have a financial stake in The Wimble but will be offering advice and help.

Joshi Herrmann, founder of Mill Media, added: “We’re really excited to be helping out with The Wimble. Communities like Wimbledon need high quality local media and this project is pioneering an interesting new model, in which an important local business gets behind a local newsletter that otherwise wouldn’t exist.”

The Wimble will operate out of a local co-working space in a converted Fire Station on Queens Road, Wimbledon.

An introductory piece on its website promises “the latest quality local journalism, reviews, interviews and features about everything Wimbledon.”

It states: “We believe in local communities and we believe in Wimbledon. Our goal is to work with and for the people and businesses of Wimbledon to inform and share all Wimbledon has to offer.

“We will be running an annual print edition over the Summer during the tennis alongside our weekly online publications.

“Everything we publish is freely available to everyone. Just subscribe and if you love it please share.

“We may selective advertise, but only with relevant local partners that are relevant for you. Think back to those local newspapers of bygone years rather than the online pop-ups of today!”
