Journalism students to win paid work in daily’s new awards

A daily newspaper is launching a new awards scheme for journalism students – with paid work at the title among the prizes.

Glasgow-based daily The Herald has launched its new Student Press Awards for 2024, which “will recognise Scotland’s most talented student journalists, production staff and editors”.

Winners of the News Writer of the Year, Features Writer of the Year, Sports Writer of the Year and Columnist of the Year categories will each receive a week’s work experience with The Herald.

The Student Journalist of the Year will also get the chance to join The Herald’s editorial team for a four-week paid internship during the summer of 2024.

Other awards include Scoop of the Year, Student News Brand of the Year, Design of the Year (Newspaper or Magazine) and Best use of Multi Media.

The deadline for entries is Wednesday 24 April and there will be an award ceremony at the paper’s Bath Street offices.

Editor Catherine Salmond said: “We are looking forward to meeting the next generation of journalists and seeing their work.

“It’s an exciting time to be a journalist – and we are keen to help nurture tomorrow’s talent.”
