Journalism students to cover championship events in England Golf link-up

WoodhallA new partnership between a university and the governing body of English golf will see eight budding journalists covering championship events in 2024.

The University of Lincoln has teamed up with England Golf to give its BA and MA Journalism and Sports Journalism students the chance to gain vital experience at events around the country.

The eight students will be tasked with writinf reports, interviewing players and staff and producing video content for social media at more than 70 championship events in the 2024 season.

They were given an induction at the National Golf Centre at Woodhall Spa this week, ahead of the new England Golf championship season which tees off with England v France at Moortown Golf Club on Saturday 11 May.

Erica Stephenson, lecturer in journalism at the University, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for our students to get real-world experience with an esteemed governing body. All eight of them are thoroughly looking forward to the chance to get out and cover golf with the skills they’ve learnt on their degree.

“We believe that the collaboration will benefit both the University and England Golf, and that students in the coming years will be able to benefit from this invaluable experience.”

Ben White, England Golf communications & data director, added: “We’re thrilled to develop this relationship. Through working with our Press & Media Manager, the students will learn vital skills such as report writing, content creation, working to deadlines and interviewing techniques, in what can be a very fast-paced environment during our championship events.

“While it will be a fantastic foot in the door to the industry for the students, it will also allow England Golf to provide more coverage to the amateur game’s competitors and our golf clubs, and help us further promote our key message in that golf is a truly welcoming and inclusive game which is accessible to all.

“We can’t wait to see what fresh ideas these young minds can bring to the table and to witness their development over the course of the year in creating content.”
