Football reporter ditches press box for unique stadium challenge

A football reporter left the press box to complete a unique stadium charity challenge.

Chris Phillips, who works for South Essex daily The Echo, sat on every seat inside Southend United’s Roots Hall ground to raise funds for South East and Central Essex Mind.

Chris, pictured, is a frequent fundraiser for Mind, having previously opened up about his own mental health struggles.

He was joined by a number of former United players to complete the challenge, which took a total of 12 hours and raised £5,000 in sponsorship.

Chris said: “It was a really tough challenge both mentally and physically so people coming down to support me was a huge help.

“Steve Tilson and Kevin Maher came along which was amazing as did Freddy Eastwood, who I haven’t seen for ages, so that was amazing.

“Leo Roget and Tom Lawrence also came over and it was a really big help along with my family and friends.”
