City news network reaches six-figure reader milestone

Joshi HerrmannA growing network of city-based news titles is celebrating its latest milestone after chalking up 100,000 readers to its newsletters.

Mill Media launched in 2020 as the Manchester Mill and has since added sister titles The Post in Liverpool, The Tribune in Sheffield and The Dispatch in Birmingham.

Between them the four titles, which collectively employ 11 journalists, now have 100,000 readers on their mailing lists, 7,000 of whom are paying subscribers.

Founder Joshi Herrmann marked the milestone by creating an animated graphic showing how the network’s audience has grown over the past four years.

Readers who sign up for free mailing lists get around half of the journalism produced by the four sites, while the paying subscribers get all of it.

Subscriptions for the four sites are currently around £7 a month.

Posting on X. Joshi, pictured, said: “Very proud of my little team, who have built up that audience from scratch in under four years by doing incredibly interesting, original, high-effort journalism. Which people seem to like!”

He told HTFP: “Getting 100,000 people signed up to read high-quality journalism feels like a great sign for our industry. I think it’s a sign that there is a huge demand out there for good writing and a form of journalism that is slower and more considered.

“When I started The Mill in June 2020, I sent our first newsletter to 23 people. The way things have taken off since then is well beyond what I could have imagined.

“We now have 11 full time staff across four cities, and because of the investment we raised last year, we can now expand to further communities when the right people get in touch.”
