Weekly pays front page tribute to trans girl after fatal stabbing

A weekly newspaper has used its front page to pay tribute to a transgender teenager who was stabbed to death on its patch.

The Warrington Guardian splashed this week on the death of 16-year-old Brianna Ghey, who died after being knifed in a park on Saturday afternoon.

Two 15-year-olds have been charged with her murder and remanded into custody.

The girl, from Warrington, and boy, from Leigh, will stand trial in July.

Richard Duggan, regional editor North West at Newsquest and Warrington Guardian editor, said the case had “affected everyone in Warrington and far beyond”.

He added: “The outpouring of grief since the news broke on Saturday night has been enormous. The whole community has been left devastated and we have reflected that in our special edition.

“Since Saturday our small team of young reporters has worked around the clock to bring the latest updates to our readers and share some of the tributes, vigils and fundraisers from not just Warrington but across the world.

“We will continue to do so as the case progresses in the coming weeks and months.”
