Watchdog dismisses daily reader’s inaccurate date complaint

NewIPSOThe press watchdog has ruled a regional daily took sufficient action to avoid sanction after publishing an incorrect date.

The Independent Press Standards Organisation found the Sheffield Star acted to remove an inaccurate story and publish a correction within three hours of being made aware of the issue.

Despite the Star’s swift action, the original story had prompted a complaint to IPSO by reader Timothy Caves.

The story in question had reported on a government energy grant, stating that “national newspapers are today reporting it will arrive in bank accounts on Saturday 1 October”.

Complaining under Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors’ Code of Practice, Mr Caves said the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) had issued a statement that this was incorrect and that they could not confirm a specific date for the payment.

In response, the Star said was the story was taken down and a correction was published as soon as the inaccuracy had been confirmed by the DWP, later publishing a follow-up story confirming the correct date for the payment too.

Mr Caves did not accept the steps taken as a resolution to his complaint because he considered the Star had failed to identify the newspaper that was the source for the story and the inaccuracy.

IPSO concluded that the remedial measures offered by the Star were a satisfactory resolution of the complaint and, as the correction had already been published, the complaint would be closed.
