Publishing giant Reach plc has continued to dominate the list of the most-read regional press websites, new figures have revealed.
Monthly statistics released to HTFP by market research firm Ipsos show Reach websites once again accounted for all top 10 places when it came to attracting unique users in May – although all bar one saw readership decline from the previous month.
The MEN remained on top with 9.6m unique users during the month – down 10pc on April’s figure – but Wales Online leapfrogged the Echo from fourth to second, pushing the LIverpool Echo down to third and the Birmingham Mail to fourth.
The only one of the ten to increase its audience was Huddersfield’s Examiner Live, which moved into fifth place with 4.68m unique users – an increase of 4.69pc on the previous month.
Fellow Reach titles Chronicle Live, Nottingham Post, MyLondon, Lancs Live and Bristol Post all retained their places in the top 10, although there was a slight change in the order, with MyLondon jumping from ninth to seventh in the rankings.
When it came to the battle for reader engagement, however, a different story emerges with Iliffe Media and Newsquest titles topping the tables for both average number of views per user, and average number of minutes per user.
Iliffe Media’s Kent Online attracted the highest average number of page views per user over May with 24.46 views per user and was also third in the rankings for the average minutes each reader spent on the site.
The companion site for Newsquest’s Colchester Daily Gazette, gazette-news, topped the metric for average length of visit, with each user averaging more than 17 minutes on the site. The Gazette also had the fourth-highest average number of page views among participating titles.
Best-performing Reach titles in terms of user engagement metrics were Stoke’s Sentinel Live, with 10.79 average views per user, and Grimsby Live with an average length of visit of 8 minutes 30 seconds.
Data for around 200 regional and local titles covering the month of May was published this week.
