Second launch editor quits publisher just months into the job

Caroline Barry newA second launch editor has left a regional publisher a matter of months into the job.

Caroline Barry has said farewell to Nottingham World, launched by National World in March, to take up a content and training role with disability awareness charity Enhance the UK.

Caroline’s departure comes after neighbouring Derby World’s sole dedicated member of editorial staff Michael Broomhead took a parting shot at the publisher’s “abhorrent” cuts when he decided to step down after five months in his role earlier this month.

The company is now seeking new editors for both Derby World and Nottingham World, which were both launched as part of an expansion into East Midlands cities traditionally served by Reach plc dailies.

A slated third title, Leicester World, is yet to materialise.

Speaking to HTFP, Caroline said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time as editor with Nottingham World but I have chosen to leave to take on a new role. I will be joining Enhance the UK in September as their content manager and trainer.

“Enhance the UK is a charity who want to change society’s views on disability, they work with organisations to support them to be more inclusive, providing a range of services including disability awareness training and run the Undressing Disability campaign.

“As a neurodivergent person, this is a perfect fit for me. I have also just released a book, ‘Neuroqueer: a neurodivergent guide to love, sex and relationships’, so this is great timing.

“I’ve really loved working with National World and I’m very proud of everything we have achieved. I have managed to grow the site from the start to where it is today through hard work, local knowledge and a genuine love of Nottingham.

“I will miss it very much but I won’t be going too far as I will remain working in freelance journalism both for local news and beyond. I am excited to see what the new role is going to be like. I want to thank everyone at National World for their support.

“I’ve been a journalist for over 15 years – four of those are in local news with Nottingham Post, Leftlion and now Nottingham World.

“Neuroqueer is my first book but the second and third are set to be published by Five Leaves in July 2024. I’ll be using my local knowledge to write two history books on Nottingham’s LGBT+ community from 1960 to 2022.”
