Regional daily makes most of M6 motorway madness

A regional daily proved to be a driving force for local news with its front-page coverage of two bizarre incidents on the M6 motorway.

Following on from a splash on ‘tuna fish’ being clocked at 70mph on one of Britain’s busiest routes, The Lancashire Post this week reported on a mobility scooter spotted doing 30mph in the middle lane.

Both articles were given front-page poster treatment, with the unusual nature of the two stories giving plenty of scope for National World’s design teams to have a bit of fun.

National World Daily Press Division Publisher Tim Robinson explained how the tuna story, which was published last month, caused a stir among scientists.

Said Tim:  “This was the story of two fishermen who, while they were fishing in Cornwall, had accidentally picked up an electronic tag used by scientists to track tuna fish migration.

“The tag went into the back of their car and was tracked by scientists all the way to the fishermen’s family home in Preston.

“Reporter Tony Durkin revealed how on their way back north, it appeared to the scientists as if the tuna was travelling at speed along the UK motorway network.”

The fishy front page was designed by Dan Bailey from the National World design team.

However last week, the tuna story was overtaken by another strange M6 tale as Emma Downey reported how police had stopped a mobility scooter as it trundled alongside speeding traffic.

Added Tim: “This was a great story from Emma in our digital team – with an actual picture of the scooter in question, from Lancashire Police.

“It’s incredible on so many levels. The scooter was in the middle lane of one of Britain’s busiest motorways and somehow it had managed to do 30mph.

“Social media response has been predictably hilarious and this is featured in our print story. Suffice to say thankfully no-one was hurt in the incident.”

The scooter page was put together by North West print manager Mike Hill and Phil Smith from the design team.
