Regional daily launches bid to rid the world of landmines

A regional daily is aiming to rid the world of landmines in a campaign supporting a global charity based on its patch.

The Manchester Evening News has launched ‘One Wrong Step’ to raise money for Manchester-based charity Mines Advisory Group, which finds and destroys landmines, cluster munitions and unexploded bombs.

It comes after MEN reporter Nicole Wootton-Cane joined MAG in northern Iraq, where she has compiled a series of special reports on the charity’s work there.

The MEN splashed on the campaign’s launch yesterday (24), pictured.

In an accompanying first-person piece, Nicole wrote: “We joined MAG on a visit to their programme in northern Iraq to shine a light on the life-saving work they do.

“Afghanistan, Cambodia, and Iraq are thought to be the most heavily mined countries in the world.

“The Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, the first and second Gulf Wars, the persecution of the Kurdish people under Saddam Hussein’s government, and the recent ISIS conflict have all contributed to Iraq’s mass contamination.

“Clearing landmines doesn’t just make land safe. It is an enabler for communities that have been devastated by war to be able to grow crops, build houses, and develop infrastructure.

“Let’s ensure organisations like MAG continue receiving the vital support they need to make sure no more children are killed by landmines.”
