Political journalist says farewell to daily after almost four decades

Angus YoungA political journalist has left a regional daily after almost four decades of service.

Angus Young has announced his departure from the Hull Daily Mail, where he has served as local government reporter.

Angus, pictured, worked his last day for the Mail and its Hull Live sister website on Tuesday.

He will now embark on a freelance career.

Posting on Twitter on Tuesday, Angus wrote: “Today is my last day at the Hull Daily Mail/Hull Live after 39 years, four years on weekly newspapers before that.

“Time to start some new freelance adventures.”

Paying tribute to Angus, Mail editor Jamie Macaskill told HTFP: “Angus has been an absolute rock for the Hull Daily Mail and Hull Live and his service to our readers over 39 years has been immeasurable.

“Angus has always had a finger on the pulse of the city. Either through sharp instincts or a bulging contacts book, he was able to tap into the issues that affect our readers.

“In that role it would be easy to be drawn into writing about the mechanics of local government, but for Angus it was always about the readers and the broader public interest.

“His contribution has not just been to Hull Live and the Hull Daily Mail but to the city as a whole.”
