MD takes top job at world-famous wedding venue after leaving publisher

John HollidayAn independent publisher’s former managing director has taken up a new role running world-famous wedding venue Gretna Green.

John Holliday has been appointed executive chairman at the venue, which became famous in the 18th century as a place for young couples whose parents objected to their marriage to elope.

John had been MD at Barrnon Media, which runs newspapers the Cumberland & Westmorland Herald and Keswick Reminder, as well as news website Cumbria Crack, for three years prior to his departure last month.

A former professional footballer with Carlisle United and Mansfield Town, he has served as a non-executive director at Gretna Green since 2022 and takes over from chairman John Hammond.

“This is an iconic global brand with a rich heritage and history. It has a bright future and as custodian I am excited to be part of its continued success.

“I look forward to working with chief executive Isabel Rhodes and the team to build on the company’s strengths and drive growth in new and innovative ways.”

Gretna Green family director Lucy Houston added: “As a seasoned professional, John brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our team.

“He has previously served in senior roles at high-profile companies and has a proven track record of driving growth, implementing effective strategies, building and leading successful teams.”
