Jill Dando’s journalist brother shares fresh hopes for killer’s capture

The journalist brother of Jill Dando has shared fresh hopes his sister’s killer will be brought to justice 24 years after she was shot dead.

Nigel Dando has appealed for new information about his sister’s death ahead of the launch of a new Netflix documentary about her life and work.

Jill, who started out on her hometown newspaper the Weston Mercury and went on to present BBC programmes including Crimewatch, was shot dead on the doorstep of her London home in 1999 at the age of 37.

The Netflix series will look at her “life, career, legacy and what would become one of the most notorious unsolved murders of the 20th century”.

Nigel had also worked on the Mercury and was a journalist with the Bristol Post when his sister died.

He told The Times: “My hope is that the publicity will bring forward someone with new information who can bring Jill’s killer to justice. I know [it was] a long time ago but someone might know something.

“My personal feeling is it was somebody looking for a kick and for notoriety. Jill was in the wrong place at the wrong time. There have been a number of names in the public domain and it might be one of them.”

Nigel also dismissed claims, revealed last year, that Jill was killed by a Russian hitman in a case of mistaken identity.

Legal papers filed in Paris accused French fashion boss Gerald Marie, 72, of using the Russian Mafia to try and kill Lisa Brinkworth, a BBC journalist who had exposed him as an alleged sex abuser.

Lawyers in France reportedly argued the mix-up may have been due to the similarities in the appearance of the two women, their occupation, and the fact they both lived in the same area of London.

Mr Marie denied the allegations, describing them as “fanciful nonsense”.

Nigel said: “I believe there was no reason, it was just an act of random brutality and Jill was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
