Historic sporting success prompts daily’s front page treble

A historic sporting treble sparked three successive splashes for a regional daily and its Sunday sister title.

The Manchester Evening News has produced a series of special editions after Manchester City lifted football’s European Cup on Saturday night, following their domestic Premier League and FA Cup victories this season.

Saturday night’s 1-0 victory for City over Italian side Inter Milan in Istanbul provided a splash for the MEN on Sunday the following day.

An eight-page pullout appeared in Monday’s edition, alongside a front cover being given over to the triumph.

And the coverage continued yesterday after an open top bus parade for the players on Monday evening, compete with another eight-page supplement.

Editor Sarah Lester told HTFP: “It’s been an amazing few days for the blue half of our city. I’m extremely proud of our team for the breadth and depth of their coverage on the field and off.

“Our website, front pages and social media channels have perfectly celebrated this historic – and completely joyful – moment.”

In completing the treble, City emulated the achievement of their cross-city rivals Manchester United in 1999.
