Football fans’ ecstasy inspires front page wrap for daily

A regional daily focused on fans’ reactions as it celebrated a dramatic sporting victory with a front page wraparound.

The Sheffield Star ran the wrap showing Sheffield Wednesday supporters celebrating a 123rd minute winning goal by Josh Windass to clinch promotion from League One, English football’s second tier, to the Championship.

Wednesday beat fellow Yorkshire club Barnsley 1-0 after extra time at London’s Wembley Stadium in their divisional play off final on Monday.

The club had previously overturned a 4-0 deficit against Peterborough in a two-legged semi-final to make it to Wembley.

Football reporter Joe Crann told HTFP: “The last couple of weeks have been absolutely crazy from a reporting perspective. Even if you get rid of everything else, writing a match report for the second leg of the semifinal where they came back from four goals down and then another for the final when the winner was scored in the 123rd minute was intense.

“With a 500-word limit and a print deadline looming it’s fair to say that the pressure was on.

But it’s really been a pleasure since that night at Hillsborough – because of the nature of it all, and the personal stories that came out of it, the range of content we’ve been able to produce has been brilliant.

“From the bread and butter quotes pieces from players and the manager to my colleague tracking down a lady who had gone viral because of her planned coach trip to Wembley, and tales of tattoos being done because of what was said before the ‘Miracle of Hillsborough’.

“Wembley itself was brilliant, the press facilities are superb there, the internet is excellent – which is by no means a guarantee in League One – and the scenes as that last-gasp winner went in were incredible.

“Things had to be turned around quickly for it all the make the next day’s paper, and the front page looked fantastic. There were so many great photos to go alongside our written pieces, so visually it looked lovely.

“It’s been fun, it’s been stressful, I’ve written more than I’ve ever written before in such a short space of time, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

“What a rollercoaster. Glad I won’t be seeing anymore extra time for a while though.”
