Editor vows to ‘be bolder’ after a year in charge of daily

An editor has vowed to “be bolder” after marking a year in charge of a daily newspaper.

Catherine Salmond, left, looked back on her first year editing Glasgow daily The Herald in a thread on X.

Catherine was poached from National World title Scotland on Sunday to edit the Newsquest-owned Herald in September last year.

In making the move to Glasgow she became The Herald’s first female editor in its 239-year history.

Catherine wrote: “It is an honour to lead this great title in its 240th year and to have the privilege of working with such a talented team.

“The people I work alongside – their professionalism, drive, energy, expertise and good humour – are without any question the best thing about my job.

“This year we have achieved a lot together, introducing new talent to our team, building a new culture, and working hard on being bolder as we put our readers at the heart of all we do, striving to give them the variety and quality they want. These are our foundations.

“And we are reaching new audiences together. Our approach to newsletters and social media has changed for example, and we are striving to be different in content areas such as education.

“There is so much to do, so much to achieve online and in print. But our heads are down and our eyes are firmly on our goals.

“Thank you to my team for the last year. And thank you to our loyal and valued readers. There is so much more to come.”
