Derelict historic newspaper office set for new lease of life

A historic newspaper office is set for redevelopment after laying empty for almost nine years.

Plans have been announced for the old Tulketh Street home of the Southport Visiter to be converted into three new units for retail or professional services use.

The Visiter was based at Tulketh Street, pictured, from 1889 until December 2014, when it was closed by Trinity Mirror, while the building was also a temporary home for Southport Library between 2010 and 2013.

According to a report by independent title Stand Up For Southport, run by former Visiter editor Andrew Brown, a planning application has now been submitted by Wallford Ltd.

The application states: “Careful consideration has been given to the design to ensure that significant architectural features of the building remain unaffected.

“Consideration is given to the historical value of the building and its architectural features. Any proposed changes aim to respect and preserve the original design intent, materials, and craftsmanship.

“The goal is to achieve a design that respects the building’s history while enhancing its functionality and aesthetic appeal.

“The rejuvenation of a derelict and vandalised property brings new life and vitality to the surrounding area, particularly through the creation of new shops and job opportunities.”
