Journalist urges readers to ‘shape my news list’ as new city title launches

Michael Broomhead 2023A new city news website has launched with its de facto editor encouraging readers to help “shape my news list”.

National World’s latest venture Derby World went live yesterday, with senior digital journalist Michael Broomhead, left, taking day-to-day charge of its operations.

HTFP reported last week how Michael had been recruited to Derby World after taking voluntary redundancy from Reach plc, where he was most recently content editor at the Nottingham Post.

He will report to Nancy Fielder, editor-in-chief for National World’s Cities division, and the publisher said last week it had “not yet appointed an editor” specifically for the site.

Sports coverage on Derby World will be provided by Dylan Oakley, who is covering Derby County FC, and Hull-based Paul Clarke, group sports editor of National World and a former sport content editor and reporter at Reach.

Charlotte Shemilt, a former Derby Telegraph field sales manager who is now media sales director for National World, will take charge of the advertising.

Michael wrote in introductory editorial: “Using video, audio, pictures and words, I want to explore issues that matter to you, give you more of a voice on various different things, and celebrate Derby and surrounding areas, the people and the businesses.

“I won’t be afraid to stand up for you and ask difficult questions of powers-that-be where necessary – but I also want to provide you with some light-hearted, escapism content here and there.

“I’m also keen to have regular conversations with you – I really want you to get involved in helping to shape my news list and the direction of Derby World.”

“I’m Derbyshire born and bred and have lived in this amazing area for most of my life. I have links to Derby and I think it’s a fantastic city with a fabulous past, present and future.

“I’m a journalist with nearly 15 years’ experience of storytelling online and in print – I’ve worked for several Derbyshire titles over the years, including the Derbyshire Times, the Buxton Advertiser and the Matlock Mercury.

“It’s a pleasure to now be part of Derby World – I’m looking forward to seeing the site grow and making it a success. It’s great to be with you.”
