Journalist to help launch new title after taking redundancy from rival publisher

Michael Broomhead 2023A senior journalist who took voluntary redundancy last month has returned to his old publisher to help launch a new title.

Michael Broomhead has announced he has rejoined National World to serve as a senior digital journalist at Derby World, which will go live next week as part of an expansion by the publisher in the East Midlands.

Michael previously spent 13 years with National World weekly the Derbyshire Times, based in Chesterfield, before joining Reach plc last year as a digital publishing editor working on titles across the UK.

He had more recently worked as content editor at the Nottingham Post, but revealed he had taken VR last month following Reach’s announcement that is would be cutting 192 journalism roles.

National World announced the launch of Derby World, as well as Leicester World and Nottingham World, earlier this year. Derby World will go live on 27 April, although its editor has not yet been confirmed.

In his new role, Michael, pictured, will compete with Reach’s historic city daily the Derby Telegraph.

He told HTFP: “It’s a really exciting time to be rejoining National World plc. It’s fantastic to be part of the family again.

“We’re going to make Derby World a success and offer a fresh perspective. I’m very much looking forward to this new journalistic journey.”

Announcing his new job in a series of Twitter posts, Michael added: “Using video, audio, pictures and words, I want to explore issues that matter to you, give you more of a voice on various different things, and celebrate Derby and surrounding areas, the people and the businesses.

“I won’t be afraid to stand up for you and ask difficult questions of powers-that-be where necessary – but I also want to provide you with some light-hearted, escapism content here and there.

“I’m also keen to have regular conversations with you – I really want you to get involved in helping to shape my news list and the direction of Derby World.

“So, if you have a story idea or a suggestion for Derby World, please get in touch.”
