Daily launches paid-for app as some stories go behind paywall

Richard Porritt newA regional daily has launched a new paid-for app after some of its stories went behind a paywall.

The Eastern Daily Press has announced the launch of the EDP+ app, which gives readers access to breaking news alerts as well as the Norwich-based daily’s news, features and sport coverage.

The advertisement-free app also offers access to current and archived e-editions of the newspaper, as well as a puzzle section.

The app is available at £3 for three months and then £7.99 per month.

Editor Richard Porritt, pictured, said in a message to readers: “More and more readers want to consume the news on phones and tablets. And for more than two decades our hugely successful website has provided real-time updates on the stories that matter in the East.

“But now the next phase of our evolution has arrived – EDP+. You may have noticed that some stories are now not available for free on our website.

“The quality journalism, investigations, crime, court and sports coverage we pride ourselves in is expensive to produce. But we are determined to continue to speak truth to power and shine a light on issues many would rather you didn’t know about.

“The EDP+ app will allow this to continue, alongside our brilliant printed product and website for many decades to come.”
