A regional daily has launched a new awards scheme in a bid to help pubs struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.

The Manchester Evening News has announced the launch of the Love Your Local Awards, which aims to find the best pub in Greater Manchester.

MEN readers were asked to nominate their local pub for the prize, with a public vote to take place from a shortlist of 10.

The scheme’s launch was announced in an editorial by MEN what’s on editor Jenna Campbell, pictured.

Jenna wrote: “There’s no doubt that January is always a tough month for pubs – and more so than ever this year.

“With Christmas and New Year celebrations firmly behind us, many people will be banishing booze as they attempt Dry January, or simply cutting back on trips to pubs, bars and restaurants.

“And this year, landlords are also battling soaring winter bills amid the cost-of-living crisis that’s crippling their custom too.

“That’s why this January, we’re launching the Love Your Local awards, to show our support for Greater Manchester’s brilliant boozers.

“While Manchester has changed a lot over the years, there’s still plenty of great pubs across the area from canalside drinking spots to city centre watering holes.

“In the spirit of supporting Manchester’s public houses, we’re asking readers to nominate their favourite local pub and tell us what makes it so special for the chance to be crowned the best in Greater Manchester.”
