Daily bids final fond farewell to football legend Sir Bobby

The final journey of football legend Sir Bobby Charlton has been commemorated with a series of online articles and special front pages.

In-depth colour writes, tribute pieces and picture packages were added to live reports and videos as the Manchester Evening News covered the World Cup winner’s memorial service this week.

Charlton, who played 106 games for England and scored 49 goals, died last month at the age of 86 following a long battle with dementia.

The MEN on Sunday ran a black and white image of a young Sir Bobby as its poster front in the immediate aftermath of his death and the Evening News followed that up this week with another emotive splash from the funeral.

Thousands of people lined the streets on Monday as the cortege took Sir Bobby – who notched up 754 games and 249 goals for United – to Manchester Cathedral via one last drive past Old Trafford.

The service was attended by FA president Prince William, England manager Gareth Southgate and many of Manchester United’s former and current players.

In his report of the funeral, MEN Senior Football Writer, Tyrone Marshall, wrote: “After a life of triumph and success, of unimaginable heartbreak and pain, of redemption and recovery, this was Sir Bobby Charlton’s final journey.

“One final trip past Old Trafford before a service at Manchester Cathedral that focused on the family man and the ‘selfless, kind and generous’ soul devoted to helping others.”

“This is a man who turned to teammate Alex Stepney in March 2016, when Old Trafford renamed a stand in his honour, and said ‘I don’t deserve this.’, he wrote. “But Charlton did deserve it.

“A family man, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, but also a footballer who held the world in the palm of his hand because of his gifts with a ball at his feet.”
