City weekly claims fifth successive win at national awards

A city weekly has claimed a national award for the fifth consecutive time.

The Cambridge Independent retained its Local Weekly Newspaper of the Year title at the Newspaper Awards last night, while the Yorkshire Post was named Regional Newspaper of the Year.

Judges praised the Independent’s “striking design and bold images”, while the Post was described as a “very grand newspaper” that has “beautiful production values”.

The ICNN Independent Community Newspaper of the Year, a heavily subscribed category with nearly 40 entries, was won by the Peckham Peculiar.

The awards, previously known as the newsawards, relaunched last year with a fresh focus on “production and innovation” in printed newspapers.

Gary Cullum, director of The Newspaper Awards, said: “This year the Newspaper Awards has focused solely on print.

“It’s a sector that’s under huge pressure but we wanted to recognise the important role that print continues to play as the industry transitions to online output.

“The overall quality of entries was outstanding and proves that our news media market remains one of the strongest and most diverse in the world.”
