Charity chief shares hope for more disabled journalists to enter industry

Grant LoganThe founder of a disability charity has shared his hope that more disabled people will become professional reporters as a result of a scheme run with the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

Grant Logan has looked back on the work of the Academy for Disabled Journalists as the project enters its fourth year.

The scheme was founded by Mr Logan’s charity Ability Today and the NCTJ to deliver the NCTJ’s level 3 Certificate in Foundation Journalism qualification for disabled journalists.

More than 60 students have completed the course, with two alumni now working in journalism full-time – Jamie Green at ITV and Emily Davison at Newsquest.

Applications are now being welcomed for the next cohort of disabled students to study on the course, with a closing date of Thursday 20th April.

Mr Logan, pictured, said: “I started off sending a team of disabled volunteers out to do some reporting and ended up starting the Academy for Disabled Journalists.

“We currently have 60 students going through our online academy from Chobham to Kenya and we want to help them go on to earn a living.”
