Cartoonist quits daily after 10 years to join city rival

James WhitworthA cartoonist has left a regional daily after a decade of service to join a rival title in the same city.

James Whitworth, who has drawn for the Sheffield Star for 10 years, has announced he has joined independent website the Sheffield Tribune.

James, pictured, previously worked as a reporter and feature writer for publications including the Star and its National World sister title the Sheffield Telegraph.

He also lectures in journalism at the University of Sheffield.

Announcing the move on Twitter, he wrote: “After a decade I have left the Sheffield Star.

“Local journalism, reporting on stories that matter and holding the powerful to account has never been more important and so I am genuinely delighted to announce that I have joined the Sheffield Tribune.”

In its regular email newsletter, the Tribune added: “We are over the moon to announce that we have just signed the Star’s former cartoonist Whitworth to do monthly cartoons for the Tribune – maybe more if we can.

“Sheffield-based artist James Whitworth’s cartoons have appeared in The Star for 10 years and we’re very proud to continue his long-standing association with local newspapers in Sheffield, albeit at a different title. We hope you enjoy them.”
