Regional daily begins succession speculation as Johnson prepares to quit

A regional daily has begun the speculation as to who will take over the Tory leadership as Boris Johnson prepares to resign.

Portsmouth daily the News splashed this morning on Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt becoming the bookies’ favourite to take over as Prime Minister.

More than 50 members of the Government have resigned in protest at Mr Johnson’s leadership since Monday evening.

According to Racing Post analysis shared by The News, Ms Mordaunt became 4-1 favourite to be next Tory leader and 5-1 to be next Prime Minister.

Other newspapers splashed on the Whitehall crisis this morning, before details of Mr Johnson’s forthcoming resignation emerged, with The Scotsman describing him as ‘In office, but not in power’.
