Most people agree supporting local press is important, study finds

Most people believe it is important to support their local newspaper, a new poll has found.

E-reading platform Readly has revealed people consume local news an average of five days a week, with 63pc agreeing it is important for them to support the local press and that local newspapers are the best way to keep up to date with news in their area.

The study of 2,000 adults also found 55pc had featured in their local paper at least once, with 15pc admitting they read to see if stories are about people they know.

More than one in seven of those surveyed had written into their paper of choice “multiple times”, with four in 10 having their letter published at least once and 54pc retaining the clipping.

Around 20pc said they prefer reading about crime, 16pc preferred local politics and 14pc human interest stories.

The poll was conducted to celebrate Reach’s portfolio of 160 regional papers joining Readly.

Readly’s head of content Chris Couchman said: “The appetite for local news and community spirit is strong in a world post-pandemic.

“From the humorous to the heartwarming, local drama to local heroes, these local reports keep readers smiling and entertained.

“It is great to hear that so many value their local newspaper, reading it alongside national news.

“That’s why we’re delighted to add 160 regional titles to the Readly platform so people can read alongside their favourite magazines and newspapers.

“Local news can have an impact on the community and allow people to engage in decision making within the area.

“Without it, we wouldn’t have access to current events and up-to-date information that is important to us in our everyday lives.”
