Hundreds come forward to help terminally ill boy thanks to daily

Daniel SheridanMore than 250 readers have offered to help organise a birthday party for a terminally ill four-year-old thanks to a regional daily.

Yorkshire Post head of engagement Daniel Sheridan was inundated with offers of gifts and services for Nova Yates, who suffers from an extremely rare form of brain cancer, after sharing an appeal on the child’s behalf.

The boy has been given just months to live and Daniel, who went to school with Nova’s mother Heather, has covered his story over recent months for both the Leeds-based Post and its sister daily the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park, a dinosaur expert and other businesses have offered VIP treatment to Nova and his family after Daniel, pictured, contacted them on the back of the stories.

Unfortunately, Nova’s condition is now “deteriorating” and his mum had appealed for help to bring his planned birthday party forward from next year to November.

Daniel, pictured, told HTFP the response from readers offering their help was “really great to see”.

He said: “Many have followed the story of Nova I have continued through my time at YEP and now YP and many comment on multiple stories to track his progress.

“His mum is so happy with the response. More than £14,000 has been raised for the family so far over the course of the stories.”
