Daily hires ex-editor to head new 10-strong team of journalists

Gregor KyleA former editor is set to lead a new 10-strong team of journalists in a daily newspaper’s shake-up of its digital strategy.

Gregor Kyle will serve as head of the digital at Glasgow-based daily The Herald, where he will lead the team in a moved aimed at driving up online subscriptions.

Gregor, pictured, was previously launch editor at two Reach plc titles, Glasgow Live and Football Scotland, before joining Frame, a Glasgow-based creative communications agency, in 2019.

Catriona Stewart will also join the new team as a writer-at-large after 13 years as a reporter on The Herald’s Newsquest sister daily the Glasgow Times. In her role, she will be “taking an in-depth look at the big issues across Scotland but with a digital focus”.

The changes at The Herald come as Catherine Salmond, who has edited Scotland on Sunday for the past year, prepares to take up the reins there following the departure of previous editor Donald Martin.

Speaking to HTFP, Catriona said: “The Herald has set up a new digital team, designed to drive our digital subscription strategy, which will take a completely new approach to our online offering at HeraldScotland.com and our social channels.”

“From working on a well-established, hyperlocal title, I’ll be taking an in-depth look at the big issues across Scotland but with a digital focus.

“It’s something completely different, and will be a huge change after 13 years with the Glasgow Times, but I’m looking forward to getting started at what is an exciting time for the paper under the new stewardship of Catherine Salmond.”

HTFP has approached The Herald for more information about Gregor’s appointment and the new team.
