Editorial boss overcomes fear of sea to help charity he runs

An editorial boss conquered his fear of the sea to raise cash for charity.

Jon Gripton, deputy group digital editor at Tindle Newspapers, overcame his phobia to complete a day-long sailing challenge in aid of Bowel Cancer West.

A lifetime sufferer of Crohn’s disease, Jon set up the charity to fund awareness campaigns, train health professionals and conduct vital research into the causes and cures of the illness.

Jon, pictured, sailed a 28-mile route from Plymouth to the Eddystone Lighthouse, in the English Channel, and back again for the challenge as part of a yacht crew.

He said: “I get sick on a boating lake pedalo.

“The day was not without its challenges, as strong northerly winds powered the yacht out to the Eddystone at 15+ knots.

“Coming back was a different story as the tide turned, the winds increased, and the yacht battled into the stormy conditions.

“I ache in places I didn’t even know I have.

“At times I was hanging over the side of the yacht to help keep it upright. At others I was floundering on the deck struggling to hold on. It was a great adventure.”

A total of 76 yachts took part in the challenge, held on 18 June.
