Daily’s newsroom to go on tour away from office

A regional daily is set to take its entire newsroom on tour across its patch.

The South Wales Argus has announced the launch of the ‘Newsroom in the Community’ initiative, which will see its journalists decamp to different buildings away from its Newport city centre office.

The Argus is inviting organisations across Gwent to host its team for a day to show readers “what we do” and to “hear about and share stories from different communities”.

Schools, community centres, places of worship, pubs, cafes and other businesses are being invited to apply.

The initiative’s launch marks part of the 130th anniversary celebrations of the Argus.

Announcing the project, editor Gavin Thompson told readers yesterday: “There’s no better way to get to know an area and the issues the people who live there face than spending time in it.

“That’s why today I am launching the Newsroom in the Community initiative.

“I want to hear from organisations across Gwent who would like to host the Argus team for a day.

“We would base our team with you for a day, doing what we normally do – writing, editing and planning stories, and putting our newspaper, website and social media pages together.

“It gives us an opportunity to show you what we do and a chance to hear about and share stories from different communities.”

He added: “I’m especially keen to hear from communities that feel they have stories or issues that we aren’t reporting or areas or groups that we could represent better.”

As part of its anniversary celebrations, the Argua also ran a 16-page supplement in yesterday’s newspaper, covering the history and with messages from various figures including Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford, local politicians and charities.
