Daily launches new column to help readers’ mental health

Martin FurberA regional daily has appointed a new columnist in a bid to help its readers’ mental health.

The Lancashire Telegraph has launched a new weekly column to be written by mental health and well-being professional Martin Furber.

Martin, pictured, will use the column to teach people “simple techniques” to maintain good mental health and show them how they can build mental resilience.

He will also advise readers of the Blackburn-based daily on some of the signs to watch out for that can indicate someone they know is struggling with their mental health and what they can do to help them.

Martin, who works in both Preston and Darwen, wrote in his first column: “Mental health issues can affect anyone at any time, sometimes when we least expect it.

“Even with all the recent publicity stating ‘It’s okay not to be okay’ we don’t always feel we are able to talk about mental health issues.

“Many of you may feel uncomfortable bringing up the subject with family, neighbours or colleagues.

“My new column is here to help you. I want to get mental health issues into the open and get the conversation flowing with you.”

Speaking to HTFP about the new column, Telegraph editor Richard Duggan said: “The past few years have been very trying for a lot of people’s mental health; the pandemic has resulted in many of us struggling.

“The added pressures caused by the cost of living crisis have undoubtedly also added to this and pushed people to the brink.

“I have been considering ways in which to support our readers’ mental health and well-being for a while now and was delighted when Martin reached out to discuss a partnership with the Lancashire Telegraph.

“I passionately believe in the importance of talking about mental health; keeping the conversation going and being honest about how we’re all coping helps break down stigma.

“I’m so pleased to welcome Martin to the team as a weekly contributor and I’m sure his advice will be invaluable to readers.

“He will not only provide insight into better mental health and well-being but will also answer readers’ questions on topics they need help with.”
