Daily celebrates after columnist wins Olympic gold

A regional daily celebrated one of its columnists winning Olympic gold with a special edition.

Dundee daily The Courier marked the achievement of the Great Britain women’s curling team by publishing a front page wraparound yesterday.

The team, led by skip and Courier columnist Eve Muirhead, secured gold at the Winter Olympics, in Beijing, with a 10-3 victory over Japan on Sunday.

Eve, who grew up in Perthshire, has been a fixture on The Courier’s sports pages since her youth and has written a weekly piece about a variety of sporting topics for the newspaper since 2011.

Inside, the paper featured an interview with her parents Gordon and Lin, who spoke of their pride in their daughter’s success, as well as John Duff, the father of team-mate and Forfar native Hailey Duff.

The team, completed by Vicky Wright and Jennifer Dodds, were pictured on the Courier’s wrap with their gold medals, Great Britain’s only ones of the games.

David Clegg, editor of The Courier, told HTFP: “The Olympic heroics of Eve Muirhead and her brilliant team have captivated the whole country.

“The Courier has been following Eve’s career closely since she was at school and she has written a column for the newspaper for more than a decade.

“We wanted to make a commemorative edition of The Courier that would mark this amazing achievement and reflect that pride felt across Tayside.”
