Weekly’s local angle on Hollywood star sparks revival of regional press tradition

A Hollywood actor has received the trademark regional press treatment after a weekly newspaper found a local angle to a story about him.

The Fermanagh Herald covered US star Matt LeBlanc becoming an internet sensation after his appearance on the reunion show of the sitcom ‘Friends’ prompted Twitter users to suggest he resembled a typical Irish uncle.

The incident prompted a further revelation that Mr LeBlanc is dating Aurora Mulligan, who is originally from Fermanagh.

A page 14 story in this week’s Herald featured the headline “Fermanagh woman’s boyfriend creates a “friendly” Twitter storm”.

Reader Leanne O’Connor shared the story on Twitter, describing it as the “most Fermanagh headline ever”.

Previous classic examples of the industry tradition include ‘Tetbury man to wed’, which featured on the front page of the Bristol Post ahead of Prince Charles’s wedding to Camilla Parker-Bowles in 2005.

The Western Daily Press, which is also based in Bristol, paid homage to its sister title following David Cameron’s resignation as an MP with its ‘Cotwolds MP retires from politics’ splash being widely shared on Twitter.

In November 2016 the Buchan Observer won plaudits online for its story following the American election, which was run under the headline ‘Aberdeenshire business owner wins presidential election’.

The following year the North Wales Daily Post opted ‘Former Anglesey helicopter pilot expecting third child’ after it was revealed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were expecting, while the Wokingham Paper ran with ‘Former Wokingham schoolboy gets engaged’ to accompany its report of his brother’s engagement to Meghan Markle in 2017.

And two years ago the Oxford Mail reported on the accession of Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito with the headline ‘Former Oxford student to become emperor of Japan after father’s abdication’.
