Weekly’s accidental OBE claim prompts reader’s watchdog complaint

An honours winner complained to the press watchdog after a weekly newspaper accidentally reported they had been made OBEs.

Philip Highy complained to the Independent Press Standards Organisation after the Reading Chronicle inaccurately stated he and Lynne Highy had been awarded OBEs.

The inaccuracy appeared in a full list, published by the Chronicle of everyone from Berkshire who had been named in the Queen’s birthday honours.

But Mr Highy complained to IPSO Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors’ Code of Practice because they had in fact been awarded British Empire Medals.

OBE

The Chronicle accepted that it had, due to human error, incorrectly included Lynne and Philip Highy on the list of individuals who had been awarded OBEs.

While the paper accepted it had inaccurately reported the awards Lynne and Philip Highy received, it did not accept that this rendered the story wholly misleading.

After IPSO began an investigation into the matter, the Chronicle offered to run a connection making clear Mr and Mrs Highy had received British Empire Medals and apologising for “any confusion and upset this article may have caused”.

This resolved the matter to Mr Highy’s satisfaction, and the investigation was therefore discontinued.
