McNae’s-themed prizes up for grabs as journalism trainer launches selfie challenge

A journalism trainer has launched a photography contest for his students – complete with McNae’s-themed prizes.

University of Central Lancashire lecturer Kevin Duffy has set up ‘The Great McNae Selfie Challenge’ in which students are invited to submit pictures of themselves with their copy of the media law book.

A £30 Amazon gift card is available for a winner, while other prizes on offer include a McNae’s t-shirt, pictured below, as well as a pillowcase, snowglobe, jigsaw and mugs.

The contest comes after Kevin, a former editor of the Oldham Advertiser, last year designed a McNae’s facemask as a prize for one of his top-performing students in a media law quiz.

Kevin told HTFP: “It’s just a bit of light-hearted fun to help persuade the new first-year journalism students, and the post-grads doing journalism MAs, that they really must have a copy of McNae’s Essential Media Law close to hand for their studies.”

The closing date for entries is November, while a mini-awards ceremony is planned for one of Kevin’s law lectures.

He added: “We haven’t quite reached the stage of Black Tie, golden envelopes and celebrity guests yet, but who knows what the future holds.

“The prize designs are unique and these are the only copies of the items in existence. I’ve been displaying the different prizes at the start of lectures each week to tempt them.

“If the winners look after their prizes, perhaps their descendants will be able to clean up in the year 2121, if they go along when Digital Bargain Antiques In The Attic Hunt Show Challenge, or whatever, is being filmed in their area.

“I do, of course, remind my students that none of this frivolity changes the fact that they need to know the Contempt Of Court Act 1981 and the Defamation Acts 1996 and 2013 absolutely inside out by exam day next April.

“But, as Mary Poppins sang, a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.”
