Fundraising drive launched to start print edition of local news site

An online-only title has launched a four-figure fundraising bid to enable it to begin running a print edition.

The Barnet Post has announced its planned reverse publishing venture, for which it is seeking a minimum of £4,700.

Post publisher Social Spider Community News is asking local people and businesses to support the crowdfunding drive, which it says will allow it to begin distribution with a planned 15,000 monthly free circulation from July.

The Post was launched by Social Spider, which publishes four other newspapers across Greater London, as a digital-only venture in February.

Editor Bella Saltiel said: “I am thrilled at the prospect of Barnet Post going into print this July, giving us the opportunity to bring news to more people across the borough.

“The success of our online demo proved that Barnet residents are keen for a local newspaper that represents the community.

“Local news is a vital part of democracy, giving a platform to underrepresented voices. I hope that Barnet Post will be a source of information, news and views whilst holding power to account.

“Please do show your support for independent news by contributing to our crowdfund.”

Rewards on offer as part of the crowdfunding campaign include annual membership for readers and advertising deals for local businesses.

David Floyd, director at Social Spider, said: “We’re really excited about launching our fifth local newspaper in Barnet.

“We hope local residents and businesses will support us to get up and running.”
