Former daily journalist honoured at new newspaper-inspired bar

A journalist’s grandson has opened a new newspaper-inspired bar that honours his grandfather.

Henry Wormell has opened The Reporter bar, in Belfast, which pays tribute to former Belfast Telegraph deputy sports editor Jimmy Walker.

A photograph of Jimmy, who died in December 2015 at the age of 78, is displayed at the bar, where Mr Wormell is manager.

Before entering the bar trade, the 23-year-old considering following his grandfather into journalist after helping him with pieces he wrote following his retirement in 1994.

Mr Wormell told the Bel Tel: “We used to go to all the motorbike and horse races together, he took me to the shop every day.

“We used to hang out all the time and he always had stories for me and made me laugh.”

The name of the bar was settled upon by owner Mark Hasson and inspired by Belfast newspapers.

Paying tribute to his grandfather, Mr Wormell said: “He loved Irish whiskey and loved a pint of something dark.

“He would have gotten a great buzz from the bar.”
