Former daily assistant news editor to run new police-funded magazine

Gemma FraserA regional daily’s former assistant news editor has been appointed to run a new police-funded justice and social affairs magazine.

Gemma Fraser has been unveiled as head of content at digital-only title 1919 Magazine, which will cover issues such as policing, crime, politics, public policy and current affairs in Scotland.

Gemma, pictured, spent nine years in senior roles at the Edinburgh Evening News and most recently wrote for Holyrood Magazine.

The project, which will launch in June, is being funded by the Scottish Police Federation but will be “editorially independent” from the organisation.

Said Gemma: “This is one of the most exciting projects I have worked on in my 17 years as a journalist and I’m delighted to be part of the magazine’s inception.

“From its in-depth exploration of key issues and hard-hitting interviews through to re-examining old Scottish cases and looking back at bygone policing, 1919 Magazine promises to appeal to a wide audience.

“I’m particularly pleased we are able to provide freelance opportunities and am confident 1919 will very quickly become a firm fixture in the Scottish media landscape.”

David Hamilton, chair of the Scottish Police Federation, added: “There is no job anywhere in the world that has such a fascination with the public as that of the police officer.

“This new magazine aims to satisfy that demand and much more, with an in-depth focus on justice and social affairs.

“We are confident it will be a popular new addition to the Scottish media landscape, providing insight, analysis and expert commentary.

“A lot of hard work has taken place in recent months to reach this stage and we’re now looking forward to publishing the first edition in June.”
