Ex-editor returns to help daily produce paper with print run of one million

A former editor has returned to help his old colleagues produce a special political newspaper with a print run of one million.

Richard Walker, who edited Glasgow-based titles the Sunday Herald and Sunday National, has joined forces with their Newsquest sister daily The National to create an eight-page pro-Scottish independence paper.

The special edition has been produced in collaboration with the Scottish National Party and pressure group Believe in Scotland, for which Richard now oversees content strategy.

The National revealed on Saturday’s front page, pictured below, that a million copies of the special paper will be distributed to SNP branches across Scotland.

Richard, who last year unsuccessfully lobbied to become the SNP’s candidate for Member of Scottish Parliament in Ayr, said: “The Yes movement working together is stronger than its constituent parts and I hope this project marks the beginning of a combined collaborative approach to put forward a positive vision of Scotland as an independent country which proves powerful and attractive enough to convince voters it offers the best hope for our country’s future.”

Callum Baird, editor of The National, added: “It was great to have Richard back – as the editor of the Sunday Herald when it came out for Yes ahead of the referendum, many in the movement know of his important contributions already.

“We’re really proud of what this collaboration produced.”
