Daily issues front-page ‘thank you’ to teachers as pupils return

A regional daily has issued a front page ‘thank you’ to teachers after being inundated with messages of support from hundreds of readers.

Portsmouth daily The News splashed on the message of support as pupils returned to school yesterday.

The News had asked readers online for their thoughts on the return to school and received more than 600 messages backing its patch’s teachers in response.

Such was the volume of the messages received that the newspaper will continue publishing them in today’s and tomorrow’s editions.

Editor Mark Waldron told HTFP: We love to ask readers for their thoughts and opinions to engage them in our daily news conversation. But I can’t remember having such a massive amount of positive feedback as when we asked them to send in messages of support for teachers.

“And it wasn’t just quick thank yous but parents taking the time to specifically call out schools and teachers who they had felt had gone the extra mile.

“We said we would run the best messages in The News – but with more than 600 messages we have run two pages today, have another two pages lined up tomorrow and will have to complete the job on Wednesday.

“It just shows how much teachers have done to keep children educated, entertained and engaged throughout lockdown and how much this is appreciated by mums and dads across our patch.”
