Dailies launch initiative to help students missing work experience

Joshua KingTwo sister dailies have launched a fresh initiative aimed at helping journalism students who are unable to undertake work experience due to coronavirus restrictions.

The Scotsman and Edinburgh Evening News are holding a virtual question and answer session for students who are looking towards getting their first job in the industry.

Some of the JPIMedia titles’ younger reporters and editors will give advice on getting first jobs and the value of newer skills during the session, which will be held this evening.

The session will be chaired by Joshua King, live news editor for titles, with deputy live editor Scott McCartney and engagement journalist Ginny Sanderson joining live reporters Beth Murray, Conor Marlborough and Hannah Brown on the panel.

Joshua, pictured, told HTFP: “We know lockdown has kept thousands of students out of newsrooms and gaining the valuable experience they need. So, we want to bring the experience to them.

“Thursday’s event will feature some of our younger reporters and editors as we focus on how to get that all-important first job in journalism.

“We want to open up the newsroom, talk about the different jobs available, how they work together and how to thrive when you get your foot in the door.

“We also want to show journalists starting out the value of newer skills: social media engagement, live blogging, newsletters, podcasting, video production.

“All from people who were in the same boat not that long ago.”

The session, which begins at 7pm, can be accessed here.
