Press release inaccuracies prompt man’s IPSO complaint about daily

NewIPSOA regional daily was taken to the press watchdog by a man who disputed the location of a coronavirus test centre mentioned in a council press release.

Asaf Khan complained to the Independent Press Standards Organisation after the Birmingham Mail covered the opening of a new ‘walk through’ Covid-19 testing centre.

The story, based on a press release from Birmingham City Council, reported the centre was based in the Lozells area of Birmingham.

But, complaining under Clause 1 of the Editors’ Code of Practice, Mr Khan said it was in fact based in Newtown.

He further sais it was at the corner of Nursery Road, rather than the reported Nursery Street.

Denying a breach of Code, the Mail onsidered the alleged inaccuracies identified by Mr Khan minor and not significantly inaccurate or misleading.

It added the information included in the story was based on a press release by the city council and was published in good faith.

During IPSO’s investigation, the Mail offered to amend the online story and publish a correction.

This resolved the matter to Mr Khan’s satisfaction, and the full resolution statement can be read here.
